Episode 109: The Champions Eight

The Toybox crew come out of the shadowpaths and explore a mysterious facility. In doing so, they find an extremely powerful entity built by the ancients. Is it a force for good, or a threat?

What follows is an account of the events during a session of my Toybox Campaign. This summary is written out in a prose format which may, for the sake of telling a story to a wider audience, take liberties with the events.
Any internal thoughts I portray the characters as having are my assumptions rather than confirmed by my players. Any future conflicts of personality are more likely a result of my assumptions, rather than actual player inconsistency.

If you want to stay updated on the events of the Toybox crew, but don't want to read through the whole prose write-up, a summary follows at the end.

If you want to start the story from the beginning, check out the first episode.

    Out of the Shadows

They emerged in a place that seemed cave-like, but they seemed to be in a large tube, stretching from floor to ceiling, separating them from the cave. Strange shadowy material floated up and down in the tube with them.

Alal, Zeke and Katrin had come out with them, but Jack and Sara did not. They hadn't noticed the Toybox open or close in the process.

The crew caught Alal and Katrin up on what had happened while those two were gone. The blue-clad man was finishing the story by saying "The ravage bear was an illusion. Short version, we got another key, went and found a door that we put all the keys into and it opened. Then we saw an Aeon Priest run by, grab the Toybox, say 'Good, now we have a chance,' and then we got enveloped by shadows again."

    "Non short version..." Clio started.

"He conveniently left out that he was the illusionist," User interrupted.

    "Yes," Clio agreed.

    "What?" Alal asked.

"He was the one...the ravage bear was an illusion being created by him," Clio explained.

"Not by me," the blue-clad man said. "It wasn't me. Just someone who looks like me."

"So it could be a different version of yourself," Alal theorized.

"It's possible," the blue-clad man acknowledged. "We don't actually know."

"And User got the key there," Clio said.

"So, if this something that happened in the past, then we knew each other before hand," the blue-clad man said. "But that's not really a surprise, considering we all seem to have some kind of connection, before it all happened."

"Well, some of us," Alal said.

"Well, some of us with other people," the blue-clad man clarified.

"Yeah," Alal agreed. "But not all of us to everyone."

"As far as we know," the blue-clad man agreed. "We don't actually know that."

"I mean, we're all connected to the Toybox," User said.

"There's obviously some kind of connection," the blue-clad man said.

    "Fair enough," Alal said.

"Not-Ilyas, can you let us out of here?" User called to the shadows around them.

"We're stuck in this tube," the blue-clad man observed. "The other one was cracked, so we were able to get into it apparently. But we can't get out. So we're going to have to break it."

"Open says me!" Alal shouted. Nothing happened.

"Well, you guys are trapped," User said, reaching towards the wall of the tube. He drew his hands back, feeling one of the strongest energy fields he'd ever felt pushing back against him. He felt like he would not be able to get out of the tube by going out of phase.

The blue-clad man raised his staff to strike at the side of the tube.

"I can't say I condone this," User said.

"Well, do you have a better idea before I do it?" the blue-clad man asked.

    "Nope," User answered.

"Okay, well, then I'm going for it," the blue-clad man said, swinging his staff. Other members of the group joined in, trying to strike at their prison.

"Not-Ilyas said that he would be here," User said.

"He probably is," the blue-clad man answered. "Remember, he is the shadow. We're stuck in the tube with him. The other tube was cracked, which is probably how he was able to get out."

"Right," Alal said. "So should we not crack this?"

"Well, he wasn't able to leave the room," the blue-clad man pointed out.

As he said this, the glass shattered around them. They blinked and found themselves on the ground in a cave, surrounding the shattered remains of a tube that was much smaller than the one they had been in seemed to have been.

Shadows exploded out from the tube, and then coalesced into the shape of a single figure. A tall shadowy creature with long arms and sharp-looking fingers. He stretched out his arms, reaching from one wall of the cave to the other before they condensed back together.

"Wow," the shadow said. "It is nice to stretch."

"You looked less creepy before," the blue-clad man observed.

"Is this the same shadow?" Katrin asked.

"It's all the same," the blue-clad man pointed out. "There's only one. The same one that's possessing him," the blue-clad man pointed at Alal, "at the moment."

"I said previously, according to your memory, that possession is a very hard word."

"Yeah, but it's the best one," the blue-clad man said.

"I think hosting is what he wanted to call it," Clio said.

"You can only call it hosting if the same person's actually in control, which we decided we don't actually know," the blue-clad man pointed out. "There's a very fine line between hosting and possessing."

"Now, on that matter," the shadow said. "I believe that previously, I had mentioned to you that you may wish to your companion, Alal, about thinks that he is currently learning about his situation and the consequences thereof, before making that choice yourself."

"I would advise you not to take the deal to be a host for the shadow," Alal said.

"Do you want to tell them why?" the shadow asked, a smirk crossing its face.

"It's bad," Alal said. "Don't do it? There's no way to control a force like that. I am not willingly hosting him."

"But you seem to be in control," the blue-clad man said.

"Not all the time," Alal said solemnly.

"From all that I know," Katrin said. "He wants to destroy the world. Kinda think we don't want to do that."

"The more hosts he has, the more control he has within our realm," Alal explained. "He's not from this realm. He's encroaching on it through me and whatever other methods."

"Then how did it get here in the first place?" the blue-clad man asked. "I don't think these tubes are just naturally occurring."

    "Alal?" User asked.

    "Yeah?" Alal answered.

"What happens if we kill you?"

"Bad stuff. Really bad stuff!" Alal said, raising his hands defensively.

"But how do we really believe that?" the blue-clad man asked.

"If you try to hurt me, you might unleash the shadow on yourself," Alal said. "I don't know."

"Okay," User said. "But if you died, would he be able to affect this world through you anymore?"

    "I don't..." Alal started.

"I think the point is that the shadow won't allow us to kill him," Katrin said. "Once we get Alal to the point where he's no longer conscious, the shadow will take over and basically destroy us."

"So..." the blue-clad man trailed off.

"And it's pretty strong," Alal pointed out.

"The other option is to just tie him up and leave him here," the blue-clad man said.

"So wait," Alal said. "I don't think that's a good idea guys. I really...that's ill advised"

"I suspect that anyone would say that when you suggest tying them up and leaving them by themselves," the blue-clad man pointed out.

"I wasn't suggesting we kill you," User said. "I was just curious, since you say that he is affecting this world through you."

"Well, I am providing a foothold in this world for him," Alal explained.

"Right," User agreed. "But if we destroyed that foothold, then wouldn't that be better?"

"Well, it depends on how many feet I'm holding on to," the shadow said.

"We don't know that," Alal pointed out.

"But if you're in control, how can he really impact the world?" the blue-clad man asked.

"I think some people are willingly hosting him because they want the same thing he wants," Katrin suggested.

"We don't know any of that," Alal said.

"You know, it might be good to get a second opinion on this," User said.

"From who?" the blue-clad man asked.

"Well, I don't know," User said, turning towards the shadow. "Do you have any suggestions?"

"Of alternative opinions on my presence?"

    "On, you know, yeah. Yeah."

"Hmmm..." the shadow's voice trailed off. "Well, I think the people who knew the most are mostly dead now, so that's tough."

    "Yeah," User agreed.

"Obviously someone still knows about you," the blue-clad man pointed out. "Otherwise Vinka's army wouldn't be after you."

"That's true!" the shadow said excitedly. "You could talk to Vinka about me!"

"Oh yeah, that's a good idea," the blue-clad man said.

    "Thanks Blue," User said.

"I wasn't suggesting talking to her," the blue-clad man said.

"Also, I don't advise killing me," Alal interjected. "Not just for the reason that I don't want to die, but I think I might be useful to you guys, also."

"I don't think anyone was actually considering killing you," the blue-clad man said. "You don't need to make your case."

"Well, you were talking about it pretty seriously," Alal said.

"We're just trying to understand your connection with the shadow," User said.

    "I am too," Alal agreed.

"I mean, it would also be an experiment of your connection with the Toybox," User said.

"Oh, that's true," the blue-clad man agreed.

"Can we talk to Chandra?" Katrin asked. "About you?"

"I don't know what that person would know about me," the shadow said.

"Do you know who she is?" Clio asked.

    "Slightly," the shadow answered.

    "Who?" Clio asked.

"How does she know who she is?" the blue-clad man asked, indicating Katrin.

    "I don't..." Katrin started.

"We don't remember," Alal said. "Literally, Katrin and I don't remember. We found the name in a note we were left in the Toybox. We don't know why."

"We know that she's important to us," Katrin said.

"Isn't that the same name of the person the robot people told you to go see?" the blue-clad man asked Clio.

"She is someone who you are seeking and/or have sought?" the shadow asked, a tone of uncertainty in its voice.

"Well, anyway, I think we'll still ponder more about your proposal," User said. "So, we'll be on our way."

"Of course," the shadow said, extending a hand gesturing down the hall.

"Thank you for the shortcut," User said.

"I will point out," the shadow said, "that so far as I'm aware, this location has not been found by others. At least, not in current times. This either means that its hard to find, or that the security that's been put in place is doing a good job. So, just something you want to be aware of as you continue in your adventures."

"Oh, real quick," the blue-clad man said. "Is Vinka using the shadowpaths to move around her armies? Is that how they get around so quickly?"

"I don't think Vinka is aware of my shadowpaths," the shadow said.

"Are there other shadowpaths?" the blue-clad man asked.

"There may be other paths that use darkness to their favor, but they would not be the same as the paths that participate in me."

"Is there another creature like you, in this realm?" Katrin asked.

"No," the shadow answered. "I am uniform."

"Is Vinka one of your footholds?" Katrin asked.

"Not at present," the shadow answered.

    "Does she wish to be?"

"I think that she would rather find another dupe to fill that roll," the shadow said.

"Another dupe," Katrin repeated. "I assume Alal is the first dupe."

"Probably," the blue-clad man said. "Although apparently that didn't work out for her, because apparently he turned."

    The End of the Cave

The crew began to walk off uneasily through the cave. Eventually, the cave floor gave way to tile floor and the cave walls were replaced with flat white walls in a manmade area.

They neared a room, but before they could get to it, an automaton figure stepped into their path. In its hands, it carried a projectile weapon.

"Halt!" the automaton's robotic voice called out. The group followed the direction. "You are in violation of Eulalia's presence. Please turn back, or I will be forced to take drastic measures."

"Who's Eulalia?" Katrin called out. The automaton didn't answer.

"Well we can't go back," the blue-clad man said. "This is the only way we can go, so we gotta go through." He ran towards the automaton with his staff, but the bot dodged out of the way of his attack.

Katrin followed behind the blue-clad man, swinging her daggers. The creature moved with grace out of the way of her blows. Clio fired an arrow towards the creature. The arrow only struck it lightly, but the bot's head fell off of its body as soon as the strike hit.

"I think it's a bit out of repair," the blue-clad man pointed out.

In the room, they found several closed doors, an open one, a lever, and eight square recesses in the ground. As they explored the maze of the complex, they found an interlocking and confusing security puzzle with levers that would open and close doors, boxes that would activate effects when placed in the recesses.

Eventually, a combination of actions led to opening a door where Alal found the final three boxes to the puzzle. Waiting there with the boxes was a man. On the man's back was a bow and a quiver of arrows. He looked around vaguely. When his eyes met Alal, he said, in a pleading voice, "We must reconnect."

"Okay," Alal said. "You recognize me?"

The man tilted his head, looking at Alal. "Should I?"

"You said that we must reconnect," Alal explained. "So we must have connected before."

"No," he answered. "I have not had the blessing of connecting."

"Okay. What are you doing in this room?" Alal asked.

The man looked around, a dazed look in his eyes. "I seek Her."

    "Who is her?"

    "Eulalia."

"Do you have a name, sir?" Alal asked.

"I am Condrat," the man answered.

"Well, Condrat, would you mind grabbing one of those boxes, and following me?" Alal asked.

Together, with Katrin's help, they brought the boxes back to the original room, with the eight recesses in the floor. Once a box was placed in each recess, they could hear the sound of a door opening.

    Offering

"That guy looks dazed," User said.

"Are we just going to just trust anyone we find in a closet?" the blue-clad man asked.

"He seems pretty harmless," Alal said. Then, he noticed an oddness. His brain seemed to have a cloud of nanites affecting it. "I think there's a nanotech presence in the area that slowly influences minds. I'm not sure what it's original design was, but I think in Condrat here it's creating a sense of awe and complacency."

"Is it just around him, or is it all around us?" Clio asked.

"It's everywhere, but he's the only one who has been exposed to it for long enough for the effect to set in," Alal answered.

Searching through the maze of rooms, the group was able to find one that hadn't been opened previously which now was opened.

The room ahead had a ramp going up to an elevated platform. The ramp extended over three tiers going up to the central platform. Across from the platform, on the far side of the room, was a large metal door.

An automaton stood guard on each side of the door.

"Do we want to go back in there, ever?" User asked, gesturing back the way they had come.

"I don't know," the blue-clad man said. "We've been through every door that we've found."

"We can leave Zeke, if you're concerned," Alal suggested.

"Well, no," User said. "All I'm saying is that I can just flip the switch to seal this place off again. That way no one finds the shadow."

"Yeah," Alal agreed. "That'd be good."

"Well, let's make sure we can get out of this room before we do that," the blue-clad man suggested. "Otherwise, we're just going to lock ourselves into this room."

"Well, he can go back out through the door and let us out if that happens," Katrin said.

They decided to wait, and stepped forward into the room. As they did so, the automatons toward them.

"Welcome. What have you brought in offering?" the automatons asked.

"Offering to whom?" the blue-clad man asked.

    "Eulalia," the automatons answered.

There was a long time of silence, as each member of the crew debated with themselves what objects they might have to offer.

"I can offer my violin," Katrin said.

"We could play them a song," User suggested.

"Yes," Katrin said. "I offer my music!"

"They're robots," the blue-clad man said. "Do they really need music?"

"That's what they need in their lives to make them a bit more human!" Katrin answered.

    "Try it," Alal said.

Katrin took out her violin and played it while User took out a pair of small drums that he played in tune. User's performance was a little off beat, but Katrin managed to overcome any detriment he provided.

"Your offering is..." the automatons began. The pause seemed to stretch on and on before they finally finished their statement. Each member of the team wondered what the result would be, and what it would mean for their path forward. "Acceptable."

The door slid down into the floor, granting them access into the room beyond. User reached out with his control of nanotech to cause the previous door to close behind them.

    Eulalia

The room beyond was filled with an air of power and chaos. Brilliant colored lights and gasses seemed to float through the air. Electricity crackled on the far wall. Ethereal energy moved about the room, some of which seemed to flare or be centered in particular points.

In the middle of the room was a circular pattern on the floor. In the center of this pattern was a stone pedestal.

Alal raised a hand to his head, trying to withstand the effect of the boundless power that was all around him.

"I wonder if this was one of those fundamental things that Feste was talking about," Alal said.

"I dunno, touch something," the blue-clad man suggested.

They approached the stone pedestal in the center of the room, they could see that upon it there was a series of twelve red bulbs, four of which were lit. At the top of the pedestal were three larger bulbs, one of which glowed green. On the two sides of the pedestal were four buttons. Then, in the bottom of the pedestal was one buttons.

After spending several minutes working with the control panel, the crew finally managed to work out how to make it work. When they did, the electricity on the far wall began to shimmer. An ethereal female figure stepped through the wall. She towered over them, standing at least twice the height of even the tallest member of the group.

"You've brought me back," she said, her voice filled with life. The energy about the room seemed to relieve itself from its chaos. The presence of energy was still something that everyone in the room could feel, but it was no longer railing chaotically against them. The glazed look in Condrat's eyes faded and he almost fell over. He looked around with a new awareness.

    "Are you Eulalia?" Katrin asked.

    "Yes, I am," she answered.

"Are you like a goddess of this realm?" Katrin asked.

"Some might call me that," Eulalia said.

"Are you the embodiment of light?" Katrin questioned.

    "Or purity?" Alal offered.

"I was created by those you would say are ancient, to wield vast powers to hold back the darkness."

"She's like anti-you," the blue-clad man said to Alal.

"Do you know of what plagues me?" Alal asked of Eulalia.

"I can see it," she answered.

"Can you get rid of it?" the blue-clad man asked.

"I don't have that power," she said.

"Uh, we're trying to get to Yrkallak tower," User said. "Can you get us there?"

"That is not far from here," Eulalia answered. "I can deposit you nearby. But you have done me a great favor in bringing me back. Is there anything I can do for you? Or is transport all that you desire?"

"Where were you before?" the blue-clad man asked.

    "She was asleep," Katrin offered.

"Much time has passed, and there have been few here to maintain my functions."

"Can you restore or memories?" Katrin asked.

"I do not yet have that function," Eulalia said. "But, at the height of my power before, I would have been able to do such a thing. I can sense about you that your memories still exist, but that they are cut off from you."

"Do you know anything about the Toybox?" Alal asked.

User seemed resistant to showing Eulalia the Toybox.

    "She seems harmless," Alal said.

    "She's not harmless," Katrin says.

"She has a bunch of cosmic power, and she..." the blue-clad man started.

"Well, she's not harmless," Alal said. "I take it back. She seems..."

    "Good?" Katrin asked.

    "Friendly," Alal concluded. "Grateful?"

"The shadow-thing was grateful too," the blue-clad man pointed out. "He also offered to give us things. Just because she's made of light energy, not shadow energy, doesn't mean she's inherently good."

"He wants to destroy the world," Katrin pointed out. "She wants to stop him."

"You don't know what she wants," User insisted.

"She was created to tide him back," Alal pointed out.

"She said she's here to keep him at bay," Katrin said.

"No," User corrected. "She said to keep the darkness back. It doesn't mean it's that darkness."

"Also, she could be lying," the blue-clad man said. "You can't just trust every energy goddess that wakes up."

    "She's pretty!" Alal argued.

"That doesn't mean you can trust her!" the blue-clad man insisted.

"I want to trust her," Alal answered.

"But that could just be the electricity playing with the synapses in our brain, so..." User said.

Eventually, after some prompting, User did bring out the Toybox.

A concerned look crossed Eulalia's face before she said, "I can't see within that."

"I know that you said that our memories are cut off from us and that you used to have the power to help with that. Is there anything we could do to rectify that?" Katrin asked.

"I hope that I will grow more present in this world, and that there will be people who will help me. Not here beneath, but above, further from the darkness."

"How can we help you?" Katrin asked.

"I would not ask of you. You have the air of champions about you, and to build up I need people who can stay with me and work with me for a long period of time. You seem the sort that are on the move."

"If we needed your help later, is there a way for us to get back here?" the blue-clad man asked.

"Above this place, I have a dwelling where you can seek me out," Eulalia said. "It is my hope that with my presence being known, I will be able to make that dwelling place known as well. I wish to bestow upon you my blessing. I sense within you that there is a compatibility." She gestured towards Clio.

Eulalia brought her hands together, and a metal orb formed within them. She lowered it down to Clio who took it.

"You can use this to call on me when you are in need," Eulalia said. "I don't promise that it will work more than once, but it may. I will do what I can to help you in your time of need."

"The darkness that ails me," Alal said. "The last time I spoke with it, it said that I have within me a purity. Do you know what it may have been referring to? Are you aware of this?"

"The darkness believes itself pure," Eulalia said.

"So you've got a really bad spot in you," the blue-clad man said.

"You must understand that, based on the knowledge that was current when I was in the world before, the darkness is the single greatest threat to this world, and to all worlds. It believes that it was here before the worlds, and it believes that the worlds are encroaching on its presence."

    "Worlds...plural?" the blue-clad man asked.

"Yes, there are planets beyond this one, and there are planes beyond this one. You have been to some of these, although you don't know it."

"Is the Toybox one? Do you know?" Katrin asked.

"The Toybox exists within the world where it is present," Eulalia answered. "But, as I said, I cannot see inside to tell you if that is or is not part of this space."

"Do you know anything about Chandra and this child we're supposed to raise up?" Katrin asked.

"We're gonna raise kids now?" the blue-clad man asked.

"So we can cross through the flames without being burnt like Chandra," Katrin said.

"Those are not meaningful distinctions for me," Eulalia said.

"Do you know anything about the Great Reach?" Clio questioned.

Eulalia paused for a long time in thought before saying "No."

"Do you know what a ravage bear is?" User asked.

"I am aware of ravage bears," she answered.

"Okay, you have been gone apparently a while. I wasn't sure how long," User explained. "Have you heard of Vinka?"

"I sense a connection between that name and a gathering of power," Eulalia said.

"Okay," User said. "Can you tell where that power is being centered?"

"Not physically at this point in time."

    "Okay."

"How long have you been gone?" Clio asked.

"It is hard for me to tell," Eulalia said. "I still need to do much connecting. I still have much to discover about what has happened in my absence."

A Rose by Any Other Name

"When people ask about the miracle of my return," Eulalia started, changing the topic. "Who shall I say deserves credit, so that my followers might look fondly on you in the future."

"We probably don't want to go by our names, or our new names," User pointed out.

"Is there a patron that you might be known by, or a quest, or an object that is important to you?" Eulalia asked.

"What about the Toybox?" Katrin asked.

"No no no no no," the blue-clad man said. "This is telling people too much! We don't want to draw extra attention to ourselves!"

    "Time Travelers!" Katrin suggested.

    Character Image designed with HeroMachine3
"Feste. Champions of Feste," Alal said.

"No," User answered firmly. Far away, in Morio tower, Feste frowned in disappointment.

"He sounds like a pretty good guy," Katrin said.

"He is not our patron," User said.

"He's the closest thing we've got at the moment," the blue-clad man said.

"We could say the wrenches," User pointed out.

"No," Alal said. "That's worse, I think."

"If you don't wish for me to speak for you, I don't have to," Eulalia said. "But many people find that it can be useful to have extra support."

"The Time Travelers of Eulalia," Katrin suggested.

"Okay, but that won't actually be helpful to us," the blue-clad man said. "If we're trying to get help, we need something that's actually distinguishing for us, so that people know who we are."

"So now we're the Time Travelers of Eulalia," Katrin said.

    "How?" the blue-clad man demanded.

"Because we tell people we are," Katrin said. "Because she said we were."

    "The Champions Eight," User suggested.

"Sounds good to me," Alal said.

"Is there eight of us?" Katrin asked.

"We might have trouble if we introduce ourselves as that," the blue-clad man said. "Since some of us are in the Toybox, there's never gonna be all eight of us at once. People will think we're bad at counting."

"That way no one will expect that it's us!" User said. "Or we could be the Champions 5 and 3."

"That's just confusing," the blue-clad man said.

"Let's just go with the Champions Eight and move on with our lives," Katrin said.

"I like Feste," Alal said. Far away, in Morio Tower, Feste smiled with hope.

"No," Katrin said. Far away, in Morio tower, Feste frowned.

"I mean, I liked him, but no one is going to know who he is either," the blue-clad man said.

"Do you know who Feste is?" Alal asked.

"I have his name within my databanks," Eulalia answered.

"The Champions of Vendernovem?" User suggested.

"Or we could just go with something like The Children of Light," the blue-clad man said.

"The Bringers of the Light," Katrin suggested. "Light Bringers!"

"Because traveling around with Alal will make everyone think that we're bringers of light," User pointed out.

    "I know, right?" Alal asked.

"We'll make him walk in the back," the blue-clad man said.

"That's as believable as the Champions of Eight," User said.

"I kindof like Children because we live in a Toybox," Clio said.

    "The Lost Children?" Alal asked.

"I mean, that might be the most appropriate," User said.

"None of these are very good," the blue-clad man laughed.

    "The Forgotten Ones!" Katrin said.

"That's not bad," the blue-clad man said.

"We know we don't know things, but other people will think it's because they've forgotten how awesome we are," Katrin said.

The group finally came to a consensus on the name "The Forgotten Ones."

    The Matter of Condrat

Condrat spoke up. "If you are sending them to the tower, if you could send me with them, I am from Mourthor, and I would like to return home. I'm not sure how long I've been away."

"Are we okay with him?" Katrin asked.

"Do we want him coming with us?" the blue-clad man asked.

"Yes, of course," Eulalia said to Condrat.

"He just wants to go home, it's not like he's coming with us," Clio said.

"Well, he says he wants to go home," the blue-clad man answered.

"We're just going to leave him here?" Clio asked.

"I thought he was going to start serving the goddess," Katrin said.

"I'm just saying she could send him one place, and us somewhere else," the blue-clad man explained. "He doesn't have to go with us. We don't know who this person is. He could have been working for Vinka! Why was he in here trying to find the shadows."

"What were you doing in here, Condrat?" Katrin asked.

"I ended up here on accident," Condrat said. "I run a shop in Mourthor. Well, may family runs a shop in Mourthor, selling cyphers. I was exploring an old temple looking for cyphers to bring back, and I must have triggered something that sent me here."

"In the place above, that she talked about, there was probably a teleport," User said.

"I'm okay with letting him go," the blue-clad man said. "I'm not saying we need to leave him here, but he doesn't need to go with us."

"Well, she said she could place us nearby. He could just leave from there."

"I have no interest in going to the tower," Condrat said. "I just want to go home."

"We could just go to the town, and rest, before we go to the tower," User said.

"The tower is about as close as I can get you right now, to Mourthor," Eulalia said.

"Oh, fine," the blue-clad man said.

They didn't see or feel anything as Eulalia used her powers to teleport them away.

As soon as they arrived, User shook his head. "Immortals, ugh."

The group stood at the edge of a valley. The landscape before them was horrific. Smoke, gas, and dust billowed out of the ground. There were many buildings. The outer ones seemed more intact than the others, but they seemed to be mangled and jumbled, as though a gigantic creature had seized them and twisted them like they were taffy. In the center of the area jutted up what may have once been a tower, but now much of it was now collapsed or vanished. Around it was a pool of effervescent green liquid. Tiny bits of bluish light fluttered through the area. Within the lake of green water jutted up a brown and blue tree with large round spheres around it's top. The branches were ephemeral, reaching into the night's sky.

"Oh," Condrat said mournfully. "I remember now. This is what remains of Yrkallak tower."

"How long has it been like this?" the blue-clad man asked.

"Just recently, the Iron Wind swept through here."

"Was there anybody in the tower?" Clio asked.

"The tower was always a place filled with academics and..." Kondrat started.

The blue-clad man said, "and now it's filled with mutants."

    Episode Summary

    • The crew of the Toybox emerged from the shadowpaths in a synthetic tube which they broke, freeing the Shadow Essence into an underground cave.
    • The crew explored their way out of the cave, finding a facility that seemed to be a maze of levers, boxes, and platforms. Here, they found a man named Condrat, who had been dazed by nanites in the facility.
    • Eventually, the crew found a room with boundless energy. Repairing a control console, they awakened the datagoddess, Eulalia.
    • Eulalia graciously offered her blessing to the group, specifically bestowing it upon Clio. She also asked how she might speak to her followers about the toybox crew, so that people might know them and be able to help them in the future. They decided on the name: "The Forgotten Ones."
    • Eulalia transported the Forgotten Ones and Condrat to Yrkallak Tower, where it was revealed that the Tower (and the facility surrounding it) had been devastated by the Iron Wind.

The shadows still make me want to play more KH too.
I realize these comments are not insightful by any means, but I am still intrigued by the story even if I don't have any cool feedback today. :-P
