Not a simple question. The Toybox is many things.
In it's very essence, the Toybox is a mystery. A puzzle to be worked through and solved.
Beyond that, it a nanotech artifact-a gift designed by the ancients, but which has been interfered with by more modern tinkerers. Because neither the Toybox's original purpose nor the extent or purpose of the modern interference is known, it adds uncertainty on uncertainty.
The Toybox is a place with many rooms inside. Several of these rooms are used as quarters for the Player Characters when they are not in the world outside of the Toybox.
The size and mass of the Toybox seems to be independent from normal spatial dimensions and gravitational pull. That is, it externally seems to grow or shrink and become heavier or lighter with no internal change. At present, it is unclear what causes the external changes and they appear to be random.
The Toybox seems to pull those attached to it back in without warning. It also seems able to send out those who are still within it. It is unclear, at present, what causes these changes.
Feste described the Toybox as a 'fundamental part' of the universe.
