Disclaimer: The following information will be established within the story of the Book of Destiny. It won't be established right away, but it's not a secret either. This preview post (and several others) are for people who want to know more and have more context before the story begins.
The worlds are made of more than just the physical material that can be felt and seen. It is made of more than just atoms and particles. Deep down, on a level parallel to the physical, is the Essence. The essence is the raw material used to create all things. It is the fabric of the multiverse.
What is the Essence?
There are many different theories on what the essence is or how it manifests. Because it is a force that is unseen by traditional senses, often times these theories are wrapped up in religious traditions and teachings. For instance, the Church of the Creator believes that the Essence is a weave, with strands sewn together into patterns and objects of the universe. This is the most dominant view in the multiverse, but it is not the only one. The second most prevalent view is that of the Temple of Truth, which holds that there exists an ethereal vault on a heavenly plane of existence. They believe that this vault holds a pure version of every imaginable item in the universe in its ideal state. They hold that all items are manifestations of the essence emulating their perfect version from the vault. For example, all swords are merely instances of the vault’s perfect sword. There are many other interpretations as well, but these are two of the more prevalent ones.
Manipulating the Essence
Some individuals learn or have a natural gift for manipulating the Essence. This can result in seemingly mystical effects. Furthering the divide of opinions on the nature of essence, the Weavers of the Church of the Creator are able to manipulate the essence as a weave, sensing the strands of the ethereal energy and shifting them to create varying effects. However, the Vault Keepers of the Temple of Truth are able to access the Vault of Purity in order to interact with the pure versions of objects, thereby creating effects through creating or manipulating their instances within the physical plane. Both groups see their way of accessing the essence as proof that their perception of its nature is the correct one.
While most Essence Wielders try to keep the Essence orderly and intact, some manipulate it in more chaotic ways. For the weavers, some find that it is quicker, easier, and more powerful to rip threads of Essence apart, rather than to move them about or weave them together. For vault keepers, some try to imitate the vault in order to make false versions of things, rather than having items tie back to their pure forms. This sort of manipulation of the Essence is very dangerous and adds to the chaos and instability of a world. If it is done too much, it can cause a world to collapse and plunge into the void. On void ships or other small worlds, even the smallest amount of chaos essence manipulation can bring about destruction.
Monsters
Sometimes, the essence can coalesce into the forms of ‘living’ entities. These entities are called monsters. There are an infinite number of different forms that monsters can take. Monsters do not feel emotions, but some argue that they can feel pain. Monsters do not require food or other basic needs in order to survive.
Monsters can either be formed intentionally by Essence Wielders putting together the Essence in a specific manner, or they can manifest by an excess of Essence in an area forming together on its own. Monsters that are created intentionally can be controlled by Essence Wielders, or even have their control tethered to more mundane peoples. In worlds where this art has been refined, monsters are often utilized for cheap manual labor ranging from construction to cooking to household cleaning. Monsters that are not tethered to someone for control often have a designated series of commands and responses that they follow and carry out. Those that are created by Essence Wielders can be created for any number of purposes. Those that manifest from the Essence on their own can also have any number of designations, but are often less predictable.
Sometimes, jagged, torn, or otherwise chaotic Essence forms together into a monster. These chaos monsters are mindless creatures that are driven in all cases towards violence and destruction. They will stop at nothing to disrupt any semblance of order in the worlds.
